Vassar Dining Composts!

Barring any supply chain issues, all disposable dishware used in Gordon Commons is compostable, including small waste like cupcake liners and tea bags. Please put these items into the compost bins! The compost bins are emptied and composted through Greenway Environmental Services based in Clintondale, NY. We provided Greenway with 185,040 pounds of compost in 2022, and have provided over 3.4 million pounds since 2006, keeping it out of landfills. Please help us out by putting your food waste and compostable dishes in the compost and keeping trash and non-compostable dishes (mostly things brought from outside Gordon Commons) out so that the compost bin is not contaminated.

Waste Not

Waste Not is a corporate wide program that allows the dining staff to measure the amount of waste being produced in the kitchen while preparing meals. While we compost our kitchen waste, this tool allows us to educate the staff on the amount of type of waste being produced and helps the culinary team to be more efficient. This information is tracked on a dashboard and reviewed by management.
